Kai grew up in Hawaii, on the north shore until he was ten years old. At age 11 he moved to Southern California, in the Mission Viejo. He began playing baseball it little league at the age of 6. He still remembers fondly hitting a walk-off single when he was ten years old, which made him so happy that he started to tear.
‘Kai’ is his nickname which has significance; in both Japanese and Hawaiian, it means ‘devotion’ and it is his middle name. At 14 years old, he placed his bets on pursuing baseball seriously when he played for the Bulldogs in the Jr. Olympics in Arizona, earning a medal and giving him confidence in his abilities to succeed at the highest levels.
His favorite professional baseball player is San Diego Padres infielder Edgar Gonzales of the San Diego Padres, who is famous for being the brother of Adrian Gonzales, and who serves as Kai’s personal trainer. His dream is to transfer out of community college and play at UC San Diego, and eventually being drafted into the Major Leagues. He volunteers as a coach with the Irvine Pony League, and is a part of the all-star program and the Little Tykes program for disabled youth. In his spare time, he likes to surf, spearfish and spend time with his girlfriend.
